legend has it that long ago, the skies were ruled only
by birds and butterflies. in the beginning, there were but three great races. the prideful eagles, the noble horses, and the stealthy big cats. they lived in relative peace with one another, but were warned by their ancestors that the three should not mix, or else all three would regret it. such a union was banned in all the lands that sunlight touched.
but two lovers, the feline Romeo and avian Juliet of this foreign world, disobeyed the law of the ancestors and made a union. from this union were born the first gryphons. and then the second, third, fourth unions occurred, between all the species. it was chaos.
the great ancestors were enraged, and did as they threatened to do. they took the sentience away from the three races, reducing them to nothing but animals. of the new races, only one survived.

now, in our times, we know that the clans are made up of a long line of gryphons that can be traced back thousands of years, and we know that hippogryffs wander the fields and forests in herds. you may not believe this tale that the old ones tell, and you may ask what the ancestors have in store for us, to punish us for what our forefathers supposedly did to incite their wrath.
